Please include your Power BI Desktop version (Help › About), the visual version, a screenshot and – if possible – a sample file with anonymised data. We aim to reply within 2 business days.

Getting started

  1. Get the visual from AppSource (Visualizations pane › … › Get more visuals › search “Ragged Hierarchy Matrix”) or import the .pbiviz file.
  2. Rows: add Level 1 … Level N columns, or a hierarchy. Shorter branches simply leave deeper levels blank – the visual removes those blanks.
  3. Values: add ordinary measures, e.g. SUM ( Costs[Amount] ). No ISINSCOPE / BrowseDepth / RowDepth helper measures are needed.
  4. Optional: Columns for a column hierarchy, Tooltips for extra measures (these can also drive conditional formatting).

Starting from a parent-child table (ID / Parent ID)? Create Level columns with PATH and PATHITEM (see the DAX Patterns parent-child article) – the visual takes care of the ragged display.

FAQ

Why is there an italic row with the parent’s name?

That parent has a value posted directly to it (its child level is blank) as well as real children. The italic row shows that own value so the children add up to the parent total. Turn it off with Ragged hierarchy › Parent’s own value › Hide.

Are parent totals summed by the visual?

No – by default parent values come from your measure, evaluated by Power BI at each level, so averages, percentages and distinct counts are correct. “Sum of children” is available as an option.

Why is there no fx button or right-click “Conditional formatting”?

Power BI only offers the fx dialog and the field-well menu for built-in visuals; it is not available to matrix-style custom visuals. The same options (gradient, rules, field value, icons, data bars, web URL) are in Cell elements.

Sparklines or visual-calculation custom totals?

These are features of the built-in matrix only and are not available to custom visuals.

How many rows can it handle?

Up to 30,000 row-hierarchy rows are loaded; only the rows on screen are drawn, so scrolling stays fast.

My formatting change doesn’t stick

Make sure you are on the latest version: remove the visual from the page, update or re-import it, then add it again. If it persists, email us with the details above.
